Study Shows People With Pets Live Longer

Everyone unwinds differently. After a tough day at work, how do you kick the stress? Some people read or get a massage. Others take their pet for a walk. In fact, a new study shows owning a pet isn't just great for stress relief; pet owners actually have fuller, longer lives.

According to the American Heath Association, your four-legged friend improves overall health. Here's how:

  • Pets, especially dogs, keep owners active. Whether it's a daily walk around the block, or a trip to the dog park, owners and pets get a workout. In some cases, pet owners are 54 percent more likely to get the recommended amount of exercise.
  • Pets have a calming influence. Some experts believe pets can sense stress and tend to be more comforting when they realize their owner is struggling. Likewise, pet owners tend to feel more at ease when Fido is around.
  • A pet makes a good sounding board. Think about it, pets don't judge. They're great listeners and they don't talk back. For some, talking through a problem with a pet is an easy way to release stress.
